GFA Extends Presidential Term Limit to Three

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has amended its statutes to allow presidents to serve up to three four-year terms, increasing the previous limit of two.

The decision was approved on Tuesday, August 12, during the 31st Ordinary Congress in Prampram, where 114 out of 123 delegates voted in favour of the change. Six opposed the motion, while three abstained.

The amendment paves the way for current GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, who assumed office in 2019, to seek a third term when his current mandate ends in 2027.

Supporters of the move argue that it will ensure continuity in leadership and provide more time to complete ongoing reforms. Critics, however, caution that it could concentrate too much power in one individual’s hands and reduce opportunities for fresh leadership.

The change aligns the GFA with several other football governing bodies worldwide that allow three-term presidencies, a model proponents say balances stability with democratic governance.
