Communiqué on the Use of the Ga Word for “Welcome” ( OOBAKƐ)

In recent times, there has been much discussion and even confusion regarding the authentic Ga word for the English expression “Welcome.” While some advocate for “Oobake,” others uphold “Atuu Mohee.” Unlike Dangme, which clearly and consistently uses “Mohee,” the Ga language appears divided on this important matter.

It is worth recalling that some years ago, under the leadership and guidance of the late Nii La Dr. Kpobitsru, this issue was deliberated upon, and “Mohee” was the chosen expression displayed at the Arrival Hall of the Kotoka International Airport as the official Ga word for “Welcome.”

In light of the current debates, we believe the time has come for a united and authoritative decision to be taken by our traditional leaders, cultural custodians, and language experts. Adopting one clear expression for “Welcome” in Ga is not merely a linguistic matter but also a cultural duty. It will affirm our identity, foster unity, and provide clarity for generations to come.

We therefore call on all stakeholders — the Ga Traditional Council, the Gadangme Council, the Bureau of Ghana Languages, and other relevant cultural bodies — to come together and resolve this issue once and for all, so that we can confidently project our language and heritage with one united voice.
