The Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, has died at the age of 98. Her passing was formally announced by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during an emergency meeting of the Asanteman Traditional Council on Monday, August 11, 2025.
The one-week observance for the late Asantehemaa has been scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025, in line with Asante tradition.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III was the 14th Queen Mother of the Asante Kingdom and the biological sister of the current Asantehene. She ascended to the revered position on February 6, 2017, following the death of her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who reigned from 1977 to 2016. Earlier this year, in February 2025, she marked her eighth anniversary as Asantehemaa.
Born in 1927 at the Benyaade Shrine in Merdan, Kwadaso, Kumasi, Nana Konadu Yiadom III was the daughter of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II and Opanin Kofi Fofie, popularly known as Koofie or Keewuo, a carpenter from Besease near Atimatim in Kumasi.
Her passing marks the end of an era in Asanteman, where she served not only as a custodian of tradition but also as the second most powerful figure in the Asante Kingdom, after the Asantehene. Both Opemsuo Radio and Joy News confirmed the news, with the Oyoko Family officially conveying it to the Asantehene ahead of the public announcement.
