The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to protecting journalists during the upcoming Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.

His assurance comes amid heightened public concern over attacks on journalists in recent years, including the assault of a GHOne TV reporter by a police officer during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on July 11.
Addressing a meeting between the Police leadership and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, Mr. Yohuno pledged full cooperation with the media to guarantee their safety.
“We’re ready to work with you. I can assure you that Akwatia will be very safe. We will protect you. No policeman will attack you; we are there to protect you. It is our duty to protect you. We’re assuring you that these things will not happen,” the IGP said.
He further proposed joint training sessions for journalists and police officers to promote better understanding and collaboration during election coverage.
The Akwatia by-election was necessitated by the passing of the Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
