NPP Youth Wing Slams Police Over Arrest of Fante Comedy, Akosua Jollof and Sir-Obama Pokuase

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised the Ghana Police Service over the arrest and detention of TikTok personalities Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof, as well as social media activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir-Obama Pokuase, calling the actions “shamelessly biased” and “absolutely partisan.”

In a statement signed by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, the group said it was “shocked” that police would “waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens” over remarks made in a viral video — comments they admitted were “unsuitable for the moment” but, in their view, did not constitute an actionable threat.

Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof were arrested over commentary and alleged threats against President John Mahama in connection with a TikTok livestream about the recent military helicopter crash. Police say Sir-Obama’s arrest is linked to “ongoing intelligence-led operations” aimed at dismantling networks involved in the illegal possession and display of sophisticated weapons. According to the police, he is assisting with investigations into images and videos he circulated on social media allegedly showing individuals brandishing illegally acquired firearms.

The NPP Youth Wing accused the police of selective enforcement of the law, alleging that the current administration tolerates “worse reckless comments and videos” from National Democratic Congress (NDC) members. They also pointed to the July 11 violent attack on MP Hawa Koomson and other NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun, noting that no arrests have been made in that case.

“The Ghana Police Service should not be a wimp for the executive,” the statement read. “Your motto is ‘Service with Integrity,’ so we ask you — where is the integrity you speak of?”

The group is demanding the unconditional and immediate release of the three detainees, arguing that their continued detention “flies in the face of our democratic ethos.”
