NCA Shuts Down Nine Radio Stations, Including Three Linked to Chairman Wontumi

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has revoked the operating authorisations of nine radio stations across Ghana, including three reportedly linked to Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The decision forms part of the NCA’s ongoing enforcement of broadcasting regulations, which require licensed stations to comply with technical and operational standards. While the authority has yet to release full details of the breaches, the affected stations are expected to cease operations immediately.

The move is likely to stir political debate, given Chairman Wontumi’s high-profile role in the ruling party and the popularity of his media outlets in the Ashanti Region. The revocation also raises questions about the political and media landscape ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The NCA has in recent years intensified efforts to regulate Ghana’s broadcasting space, citing the need to ensure compliance with the Electronic Communications Act and to prevent the misuse of the airwaves.

Further details, including the full list of affected stations and the reasons for the revocations, are expected to be made public in the coming days.
