No single ethnic group can win us power; a candidate must have cross-ethnic appeal- Lawyer Akbar replies to Ken Agyepong’s tribal comments.

A member of the Bawumia Campaign team, Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, has said that no single ethnic group in Ghana can guarantee a Presidential victory in a national election.

He stated that a candidate must therefore have cross-ethnic and cross-regional appeal to win the presidency.

In a Facebook post reacting to some comments made by an aspiring flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) calling on Akans to vote for Akan candidates, he said, “On claims that the North is supporting Dr Bawumia because he is from the North, attacks our judgement as Northerners in a very painful way. Ken for years, has been trying to create bloody borders within and outside the NPP in furtherance of his personal ambition. He is either always asking Akans to kill Gas or Ewes or to reject Northerners.

“The idea by Ken that the Akans are incompetent in assessing those who ask for their mandate beyond their ethnic identities is insulting to the intelligence of Akan voters.

The reality is that no single ethnic group in Ghana can guarantee a Presidential victory in a national election. A candidate must therefore have cross-ethnic and cross-regional appeal to win the presidency. On claims that the North is supporting Dr. Bawumia because he is from the North attacks our judgement as Northerners in a very painful way. We possess sound judgement. We know Ken and we know Dr. Bawumia. We have never been in doubt that Dr. Bawumia is miles ahead of Ken and will make a better leader of our party and nation than Ken. This choice cannot be difficult even for a primary two pupil. I comprehensively addressed it two weeks ago in a viral video. I need not repeat the points I canvassed.”

Meanwjhile, the campaign team of Ken Agyapong, has strongly refuted a JoyNews publication claiming he made tribal comments urging Akans to reject minorities. The team says the report is false, misleading and inconsistent with both the facts and Mr. Agyapong’s long-standing public record.

In a strongly-worded statement, the Ken Agyapong’s Campaign team described the JoyNews headline as “deceptive, inflammatory, and completely baseless.”

The campaign clarified that Hon. Ken Agyapong’s remarks were not tribal, but rather a direct response to what they describe as “unprecedented levels of tribal intimidation” faced by his team and supporters in parts of the North ahead of the party’s primaries.
