Accra Will Remain The Capital City – President John Dramani Mahama Announces

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans for the development of a brand-new city to help decongest Accra, while maintaining Accra as Ghana’s capital. In a recent video announcement, Mahama explained that the new urban centre will serve as a modern, well-planned alternative that supports population growth, economic activity, and improved quality of life.

According to Mahama, the project aims to attract investment and tourism, with a strong focus on smart-city infrastructure, efficient drainage systems, and enhanced sanitation. He emphasized that the new city will feature strict planning regulations — eliminating the proliferation of kiosks, unregulated street vending, and haphazard construction. “Everything one needs will be readily available in designated commercial areas,” he noted.

The proposed city will stretch from the Dawa Industrial Zone through the Saglemi Housing enclave to Bundase, and extend toward parts of the Volta and Eastern regions. It will host industrial parks, a commercial centre, and a financial district as part of what Mahama described as a green digital city concept.

A feasibility study for the project is expected to begin by the end of 2025. Mahama added that the Ministry of Finance is already making provisions to support the initiative and ensure its successful execution.

If completed, the new city would mark one of the most ambitious urban development projects in Ghana’s history, potentially reshaping the country’s economic and infrastructural landscape.
